The classic red KONG toy is now ubiquitous in pet stores across the country. Born from the idea of combining three balls together, these snowman-shaped durable treat dispensers are popular with dogs large and small. But have you ever wondered what these and other KONG dog toys are made of? Although they’ve proven to be durable, the question remains of whether the materials used are safe and natural.
According to KONG, almost all of its toys are manufactured in the U.S. This Colorado-based company also states that its products are made with FDA-approved materials and routinely tested for safety. Still, here is some background information on several of KONG’s most popular products:
KONG Classic
This popular product is an erratic bouncing “ball,” treat dispenser and chew toy all rolled into one. It’s also manufactured from all natural rubber that is safe for dogs to chew. Keep in mind that the edible KONG products that are often sold alongside the toy are not so natural. The standard peanut butter flavored “Easy Treat” spray contains soybean oil, dextrose, corn starch, maltodextrin, artificial flavors and an array of other artificial ingredients. In light of that long and confusing ingredient list, consider stuffing these toys with treats from BarkShop or your own spreads instead.
KONG Senior
Again, KONG reports that this chew toy is made from all natural rubber. Still, the material is softer and far more flexible, making it a safer choice for older gums and teeth.
KONG Extreme
The more durable model of the KONG classic is reportedly also made from safe and all natural rubber. This version feels denser and less giving to the touch than the classic version, thus making it a good choice for any highly motivated super chewer.
KONG Puppy
Reportedly the “most gentle” toy in KONG’s rubber toy line, this small puppy chew toy is soft, bendable and reportedly safe for brand new puppy teeth.
KONG “SqueakAir” Balls
These durable tennis balls are highly popular with people whose dogs play endless games of fetch. Unlike regular tennis balls, “SqueakAir” balls are flexible, squeaky and covered in less scratchy fabric. The drawback? Unlike the majority of KONG’s other products, their tennis balls aren’t made in the U.S. Instead, they’re manufactured in China.
It’s also not clear exactly what materials made from, although KONG states that they contain all natural rubber and non-abrasive felt. This felt was specially designed by KONG with the purpose of not irritating gums or wearing down teeth over time. The rubber, presumably, is the same material used in the KONG classic toys, although the company isn’t transparent about its source.
KONG “Airdog” Squeaker Donut
KONG’s other felt-covered toys are also manufactured in China. Although the shapes of these toys vary, the materials appear to stay the same: all natural rubber, non-abrasive felt and a squeaker inside. Like the “SqueakAir” balls, these toys are intended for fetch and play. They’re also highly durable, meaning your dog should get good use out of them.
KONG “Wubbas”
No KONG “Wubba” toy is the same. Yet, the general design of these unique toys is a rubber tennis ball that’s covered in durable reinforced nylon fabric. The toys also have long tail strips of fabric at the end, which makes them even more fun for dogs to “kill” and shake. Like other KONG products though, these products are made in China. The materials used are undisclosed, although reported to be tested and safe.
Super Chewer Dog Toys
For those with dogs who enjoy KONG toys, they’re also sure to love Super Chewer Dog Toys from BarkShop. The toys in this collection are highly durable and safe, and come in a variety of shapes and textures.
