As Purina stated during the announcement:

“[Merrick] is one of the fastest-growing natural and organic pet food companies…Upon completion of the transaction, which is expected to close over the next several months, Merrick will continue to operate as an independent business, with no planned changes to its management or operations.”

Since it was acquired in 2010 by Swander Pace, Merrick has become a company that has widespread reach in the organic pet food industry. Their products include brands such as Whole Earth Farms, Merrick, and Castor & Pollux, among others.
The company was founded by Gareth Merrick and his family in 1988, and has since grown to employ over 350 employees in two states.

However, the news was not greeted with enthusiasm by many pet owners. After going public with the announcement, a deluge of their customers expressed their dismay to the company on their social media channels.

Nonetheless, Merrick stated in their press release, this acquisition will “further build upon its record of providing pets with
industry-leading nutrition, quality and food safety, while taking advantage of new global resources and innovations.”
