You could call this pup a couch potato, but that’s definitely not fair.

When the 3-year-old old Pit Bull’s owner moved last week, he did the unthinkable: He abandoned the pup on a curbside couch next to some garbage.

The dog owner’s Phoenix-area neighbors were so outraged that one of them took a photo of the pup sitting on the couch and posted it on Facebook – and it has since spread like wildfire.

“Some of our volunteers brought the Facebook photo to my attention,” says Melissa Gable with Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, who first took the dog in. “This was [taken outside] the dog’s house, and that was a couch that the owner had discarded. The more we heard from people in the area, we realized it was true – that he had just been dumped, abandoned.”

Because this is a possible case of animal cruelty, the pup, named Brownie, has been transferred to the Arizona Humane Society. Phoenix police are currently investigating the case.

In the time Gable spent with him, she saw that the pup was definitely frightened by the ordeal.

“On Thursday when he came in, he was pretty scared, he didn’t want to come inside [from the outdoor dog run],” she tells PEOPLE. “But by Saturday, he was inside, tail wagging, eating treats. Really a sweet dog.”

Given all of the media attention and interest in the dog on social media and beyond, his future is bound to be bright.

“We had rescue groups that wanted to take him, people that wanted to adopt. I’ve talked to several folks,” says Gable. “Definitely receiving more calls about him than your average dog.”
