It’s an extremely sad day for many people, as Angel – the co-founder, inspiration, and mascot for The Stand Up For Pits Foundation – has passed away.

Angel RIP Facebook

Rebecca Corry, Angel’s owner and the human founder of Stand Up For Pits, released a statement early this morning on her Facebook and Instagram pages, stating:

“After a long hard battle with cancer, my Angel has passed peacefully. May she rest in peace and continue to inspire us today and always to be the voice of the voiceless. Celebrate her beautiful life by rescuing one just like her. There are millions of Angels among us.”

Rebecca adopted Angel in 2008 after she was rescued from the streets of South Central Los Angeles. Her story is on the Stand Up For Pits Foundation’s website, telling the tale of a dog who had seen a troubled and traumatic past. The website states:

“Angel’s ears had been horribly home cropped (cropping of ANY kind is NOT ok), chemical burns all over her back, and her tail appeared to have been previously broken, had been overbred, was filthy, and had puncture wounds all over her body, most likely from being a bait dog.”

Despite it all, Angel remained a sweet and loving dog who really appreciated the kindness of Rebecca taking her into her home. In return, Angel inspired Rebecca to speak out on her breed’s behalf and begin raising awareness against issues such as animal cruelty, dogfighting, and Breed-Specific Legislation.

Angel Born Inherently Good

She coordinated the One Million Pibble March on our nation’s capitol in Washington, DC, and has raised and donated thousands upon thousands of dollars to help aid in the rescue and rehabilitation of countless Pit Bull-type dogs. Angel came to Rebecca from the shelter with a grade 2 mast cell tumor that was ultimately removed. She underwent several more surgeries over the years, continuing to battle mast cell disease, but eventually, it was just her time.

Angel

It’s never an easy thing to lose a beloved pet, as many of us know or can imagine. There are few words that can comfort in a time like this, but we know that Angel’s spirit and light will live on in all the hearts that she touched.

Angel had a difficult beginning to life, but was one of the fortunate ones who got a second chance. She had a very special purpose in her life to show what loving, wonderful pets not only Pit Bull-types can make, but all animals that have been rescued from abusive, neglectful, or otherwise unsavory backgrounds.

Angel Birthday

Angel’s most recent birthday celebration

Miss Corry’s Instagram for the past few days has been filled with pictures we now know were Angel saying goodbye to her friends. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

Angel goodbye

But most of all, she was loved by her mom. Angel experienced a life most of us can only dream of, filled with cookies and friends and travelling. We have no doubt that she left this world a happy Velvet Hippo with no question in her mind that she was loved.

Rebecca and Angel

We offer our sincerest condolences to Rebecca Corry and all those that were close to Angel. We know there will never be another like her, but are eternally grateful for all that she has done. We also know that she’s just across the Rainbow Bridge, telling jokes with that dry British sense of humor and riding around on her motorcycle with her ears flapping in the breeze.

Angel Smile

Please help continue Angel’s mission with the Stand Up For Pits Foundation by donating, attending events, buying merchandise, and educating everyone about the importance of spaying/neutering, ending animal abuse and breed specific legislation, reporting dogfighting, and rescuing.
