As severe flooding in Texas and Oklahoma claimed lives and left many homeless over Memorial Day weekend, the burden of finding homes for displaced animals added to the already hectic workload of workers in animal shelters.
Overcrowded and facing a host of other issues that impacted their ability to safely find homes for the pups and kittens, Austin Animal Center was shut down due to evacuation of animals from an Austin shelter. So when an appeal went out to the community for kind folks who could provide a dry, warm bed for a shelter animal, people lined up to help out.
Austin Pets Alive! shared these pictures on their Facebook page of the flooded shelters and kennels that were rendered unusable, encouraging people to come by and save a life for at least a night until the storms passed. The shelter works to end the euthanasia of perfectly healthy animals caught in the shelter system.
And the help didn’t stop there. Donations of food and dry linens for the wet pups also poured in.
