When Garret Kaulkus stumbled upon a dying, abandoned dog, he did the unimaginable.

Leaving behind his bike, showing no concern for himself, Garret carried the injured dog over half of a mile to his home to get the dog the treatment it needed so badly.

The story came to light through a post on Facebook by Purple Heart Rescue. The author of the post wrote:

“When I met Garret and his father at the vet’s, my heart broke seeing the condition of this sweet soul. I immediately started to get angry and looked into Garret’s eyes and saw nothing but compassion and hope.”

The original owner and cause of the injuries are unknown, though the Purple Heart suspects abuse. The author of the post also stressed Garret’s perseverance:

“This young man found this terribly abused dog… and would not leave his side or give up hope.”

According to the author, “Garret was my teacher” that day.

Tragically, the dog did not survive his injuries. But at the very least, the poor pup left this world knowing that there was one decent soul amongst us, and may Garret Kaulkus serve as an example to the rest.
