Lory Escudero, a resident of Arica, Chile, made a startling discovery when she went to look for her pregnant dog. She discovered the pup, named Reina, nursing a two year old boy!
The toddler was emaciated, had several skin infections, and infested with lice. Lory couldn’t believe what she saw. She told reporters:
“Everyone that is here, we’re all parents and if you saw what we saw from my position as a woman, as a mother, it was terrible.”
Capt. Diego Gajardo, who was one of the first officers on the scene, said that the boy was in such a state of starvation that the dog likely saved his life.
At first, officials believed that the boy’s parents had abandoned him, but they later showed up at the hospital where he was being treated. The toddler has been released from the hospital and Chilean child welfare authorities are caring for him.
