Edina Pasic and her friend Caki rescue dogs in Sarajevo, Bosnia. They recently encountered one of their most heartbreaking rescue cases when they spotted a seemingly abandoned dog on the side of the road.
The dog started to run from Edina and Caki when they approached her, but Edina wouldn’t give up on rescuing the dog.
She wrote on Care2:
“After a while, I didn’t even know what I was talking to her about anymore. I begged her to stay there with me. She was full of scars. I cried with her. Her breasts were hanging to the floor.”
Edina knew that the dog was either pregnant or had recently given birth.
The scared dog eventually walked toward her rescuers and also quickly gobbled up the food they offered her. Then she did something odd – she took some of the food in her mouth, but did not eat it. She turned around and began to walk down the highway. Edina knew this meant that the dog had already given birth and was taking the food to her puppies.
Edina and Caki followed the new mom down the highway.
“She kept turning around to see if I was still following her, like she was taking me to see her babies.”
They walked for over a mile and Edina wondered how frequently the dog made the trek to look for help and food. She must have walked for miles traveling back and forth between her home and the highway.
The dog, whose name is Mimosa, led them to a cluttered and dirty shed where the crying puppies had been living. When Edina went up to the house, the owner immediately became angry and said that he intended to abandon the puppies “somewhere far away.”
“Poor Mimosa was wagging her tail when the owner of the house came towards her. Even though he didn’t love her, she still loved him.”
Thankfully, Mimosa and her puppies finally know what real love feels like, because Edina and Caki were able to convince their owner to let them take the pups. The dogs are now safe in foster care and waiting for their forever homes.
