“Humans Of New York” Spotlights How One Man Helps His Dog Recover From Trauma

One of the wonderful thing about Humans of New York is that it shows us heart-warming tales of dogs and their owners.

This gorgeous pup may look calm and cool, but her owner shared the story of her past, which included sadness, anxiety, uncertainty. Many humans and pups know these feelings all too well.

Pups like this sweet girl can be impacted by trauma. Soon after the post went live, a huge out pouring of love and support flooded the comments to let both the own and his pup know that they weren’t alone.

The owner told Humans of New York: “We’re on the slow plan to get over her terrible beginnings. She has a lot of PTSD…When I first brought her home, she wouldn’t even leave her carrier for the first three days.”

The owner knew he had to support his pup in every way possible. With a kind and open heart, he set up white noise machines and slowly introduced her to any new routines, like walks.

Each day with a dog recovering from stress and trauma is different. And bit by bit, owners can support their pups in different ways. He goes on to add that his pup does have play time outside, but it can be unpredictable. As this pup’s owner said: “She tends to change her mind once we get to the elevator, but I always give her time to regroup, and she’s happy when we finally get outside. It’s so great to see her enjoy the outdoors.”

With almost half a million shares on this image, it’s important to note that dogs can support us in times of struggle and we can also support them. The sheer amount of positive comments to the post is inspiring.

This charming pup’s story can resonate with so many dog lovers everywhere. We want our dogs to have healthy and fulfilled lives, despite traumatic circumstances. There are many owners and dog allies out there ready to support pups in times of need while recovery from difficult pasts.
