The adoption group Greyhound Pets of America has chapters all over the U.S. and Canada devoted to educating the public on the joys of adopting a Greyhound. Their goal is to find loving, permanent homes for Greyhounds in need. Last month, the Central Texas Chapter held a unique and oh-so-dapper event to raise funds and show off some of the retired racers currently up for adoption.

The Greyt Gatsby event featured hoomans in extravagant 1920s regalia from feathered flapper dresses to pinstriped gangster suits. But the real stars of the show were the hounds! The males were decked out in tuxes, bow ties and cuffs, while the females rocked pearls and elaborate ’20s inspired headpieces.

The fancy-looking pups strutted down a carpeted runway, and the guests danced the night away to modern jazz. There were hors d’oeuvres, period-inspired beverages, a photo booth, a costume contest, and a raffle featuring fabulous prizes.

The event was a rousing success for GPA of Central Texas, but the dedicated volunteers aren’t planning on taking a break anytime soon. Although the group is yet to schedule their next major fundraiser, they stay busy with the adoption events they host every Saturday and Sunday- check out the schedule here.

They also offer an extremely thorough fostering program. GPA considers their foster pawrents to be their most important volunteers. The number of dogs they can help is limited by the number of foster moms and dads available to take them in. The organization feels that the foster process is an integral part of preparing a retired Greyhound to become a well-adjusted family pet. Foster parents are also given first dibs on adopting the pups they foster should they fall helplessly in love!

Breeze is a playful 6-year-old girl who loves walks and riding in the car. Shes looking for a home without small pets.

Thanks to the generous donations GPA Central Texas receives, there is no financial burden on the foster moms and dads. All they are asked to provide is the love and support needed to give the dogs the best possible chance for adoption.

Ms. Siggie is full of personality! She loves other dogs, cats and snuggling with her foster mom. She would love to be adopted by a family with another Greyhound!

While a GPA dog is in foster care, they are taken to the veterinarian and provided with annual examinations, vaccines, heartworm testing and preventative, spaying or neutering, and dental cleanings. Recently the Texas pet supply company, Tomlinson’s donated food for all the dogs during their time in foster care!
