In this touching short documentary, one man shares his experience of being blind and how his guide dogs have taught him to always ‘look forward, not back.’

Joe Bollard lost his eyesight after an operation at the age of 2. In the mid-70s, he became one of the first people in Ireland to be matched with a guide dog, an event that completely transformed his life.

Joe’s current guide dog, York, has his complete trust. As he says in the video, “York and I are a pack. There’s only two of us but we’re a pack.”

He also talks about how he loves his dogs like family: “When I wake up in the morning the first thing I think of is the dog. I want to feed the dog, I want to let him out. The last thing I think of before I go to sleep is ‘I wonder is he okay’.”

In the film, Joe offers some sage advice he learned from his beloved companions:

“Don’t look back. You’re not going that way. Look forward. That’s what I do. One of the first words they teach your dog and you in your training is the word ‘forward’, and that’s the way you look.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
