Losing your precious dog is the stuff of nightmares. For one family in Oregon, this nightmare came true in the worst way after their beloved Labradoodle, Gracie, fell 200 feet off a cliff after wrestling with another pup on a family hike near Punchbowl Falls.

“We kept hearing her rolling and rolling,” said dog owner Michelle Simmons in a video interview about the incident. “She yelped out and we didn’t hear anything after that…we thought that was it. We felt we had lost her.”

After calling for help and trying in vain to find her, the heartbroken family held a service in Gracie’s honor, collecting rocks to pitch into a river while sharing the good memories they’d all had together.

That’s when a hiker ran down to Simmons and her family to give them the best news ever. Gracie had been spotted on a ledge, and she was still alive. Fearing the worst, volunteer rescuers from the Oregon Humane Society Technical Animal Rescue Team (OHSTAR) were dispatched to the area.

Eight hours after her fateful fall, Gracie’s family was reunited with their beloved dog, who was relatively unhurt, save for some bruises and scratches.
