These Dreamy Creations Of Pit Bulls And Flowers Are Helping To Save Their Lives

Sophie Gamand, a French photographer living in NYC, focuses her photography on dogs and our relationship with them. In her series, Flower Power: Pit Bulls of the Revolution, she hopes to help change the pit bull stereotype. daisy-pit-bull On the Sophie Gamand Photography website, she says the project began as an excuse for her to discover more about Pit Bulls. "Like many people, I admittedly had prejudices against them," she says on her website. "But as an active volunteer with many rescue groups, I often came in contact with Pit Bulls and was slowly warming up to their sweet nature. I decided to confront my apprehensions and explore their soft side in a visual way." sean-casey-rescue Gamand explains Pit Bulls are judged based on certain physical characteristics. If they physically look like they belong to that group, people regard them as dangerous, no matter their individual temperament. She says the urban, gritty photographs you often see of Pitties feed the Pit Bull bias. pibble-mix Armed with her artistry and desire for change, she decided to portray the dogs in a feminine, dreamy way. She made flower headpieces and approached three NYC rescue groups: Sean Casey Animal Rescue, Second Chance Rescue and Animal Haven. They all welcomed her project. pit-bull-flower The Flower Power project blossomed from there, and she's since photographed adoptable dogs at other shelters and rescues. She'd like to eventually expand the project to other cities. so-fancy "Flower Power is about challenging myself to approach pit bulls with a fresh perspective and an open heart," she says on her website. "I invite the viewer to do the same." adopted-pitbull For more on her project, check out Sophie Gamand Photography. For adoption info, go to Striking Paws. To help the cause, share her Facebook photos with your friends and family, purchase a calendar, sponsor a crown, or use the hashtag #PitBullFlowerPower. flower-crown-dog Whatever you do, Gamand hopes you'll take a stand against the blind euthanasia of 1,000,000 pit bulls every year.
