Jonie really does love Chachi.

Last week, a pit bull named Jonie was found carrying her injured friend, a Chihuahua named Chachi, in her mouth around a Savannah, Georgia neighborhood.

According to animal control officers, Jonie would periodically put Chachi down to lick his badly infected eye.  Chachi seemed to enjoy the attention and help from his pal, officers said on the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Facebook page.

“It’s not every day we get to see such devotion between two special dogs like this,” said Animal Control Officer Christina Sutherin. “They are both such sweet animals.  But the relationship they share just sets them apart.  It would be wonderful if we could find a home that could take both of them.”

Shelter veterinarians had to perform surgery to remove Chachi’s infected eye.  Chachi is doing much better now, and on Tuesday, Jonie was allowed to visit her pal for the first time since the surgery.  According to shelter staff, it was an emotional reunion, with the two best friends licking each other, whining, caressing and finally cuddling.

“The staff is amazed at the dedication and love these two have for one another,” Sutherin said.  “Neither one seems to care about another dog they are exposed to, only each other.  They truly appear to be soul mates.”

Because no one has stepped forward to claim ownership of the pair, they will be put up for adoption.  It is the hope of the shelter that the two ‘soul mates’ will be adopted together.
