While there are few fans of a wet dog, there seems to be nothing cuter than an underwater dog, or puppy for that matter. No one knows this to be true more than award winning photographer Seth Casteel.

Seth no doubt has a job most dog lovers would be envious of. The photographer has made a living capturing moments of dogs and puppies diving underwater and swimming in pools.

The photographer and author of Underwater Dogs and Underwater Puppies recently stopped by our office to share tips on snapping the perfect photo, and to fill us in on his new project with Banfield Pet Hospital.

Banfield, one of the world’s largest full service veterinary practices, teamed up with Seth on a mission to capture and uncover the stories of how dogs are heroes in our lives. The tour kicked off in Minneapolis and will be wrapping up in San Diego October 23-24. So far the campaign has captured some amazing stories and photos you can see here. My favorite part of this campaign however is not just the adorable photos, but hearing why Seth got involved.

He shared with us that when Banfield approached him, the campaign (Pets Are Heroes Too) really stuck with him. The photographer has always been curious to learn more about the relationship people have with their pets and how they influence their everyday life. He believes dogs, remind us to get outside and never take life too seriously. When it comes down to it, dogs often influence us in more ways than you might even realize. This idea expands into the tips Seth shared with us, the making of his books and his contribution to rescues.

When trying to capture the pupfect photo, the photographer recommends taking as many shots as you can. It goes without saying that Seth knows this from a ton of experience. Out of 1,500 puppies 72 were featured in Underwater Puppies and out of 300 dogs 67 were featured in Underwater Dogs.

If underwater photos are more than what you’re looking for, Seth suggests using treats and peanut butter to get awesome actions shots of your dog licking and eating.

Introducing new sounds are great for keeping dogs looking alert and at the lens. Silhouettes, lighting and unique angles are all things the photographer suggests people play around with to get their best shot.

Seth has used these tips not only in his work, but to help rescue facilities better photograph their dogs. His program One Picture Saves A Life provides shelters with cameras, software and lessons on usage to help them capture better shots to increase the likelihood of adoption.
