Petey the Pit Bull
rejects morning's demands, taking a full minute to slither out of bed -- unless he senses that food might be available.
"Because that will elicit a 10-foot leap from the bed to the hallway at full speed to the kitchen for breakfast," says Petey's mom, Anne Wuhrer.
Yes, Petey has his priorities straight, doggedly pursuing comfort and companionship - and food - at every opportunity.
This, from inauspicious beginnings. Petey was born six years ago to a mom who escaped a cruel owner.
"She had escaped and was running on the streets pregnant and taken into a foster home where she gave birth to three puppies," says Wuhrer, who is director of development for Dogs XL Rescue
Now, Petey lives in Northern Virginia, with Wuhrer, her husband, their three human children, another Pit named Pixie, and whatever foster pup happens to be living there at the moment.
Petey insists on snuggling them all, especially if they're amenable to spooning. Which, of course, they all are.
Given the chance, Petey extends his affections past the family.
That is often, but not always, welcome.
"At one point, he was a certified therapy dog," explains Wuhrer. "However, we couldn't stop him from his strong desire to kiss some of the kids he saw. Which is a hospital no no."
Well, never mind. Petey's pretty happy at home.
He even has a kind of sixth sense for when and where his favorite people are about to sit or lie somewhere comfy.
"When he thinks he has figured it out, he runs to that location, whether it be the bed or sofa, making a flying leap to get there first to reserve his spot," says Wuhrer.
And if he can wedge his way between two people? Well, that's just heaven for this dog.
Wuhrer says that Petey's art for relaxation and love is inspiring to the hoomans, as well -- providing life lessons about what is important, what is true.
Like fun and family and food, and finding just the right spot upon which to lie -- sometimes for 15 or 20 hours a day -- in this hectic, chaotic world.
"Petey really is a role model for many," she says. "Sometimes just being next to someone is all you need to get through life."
