12 Things All Dog Parents Do To See If Their Dog Loves Them

In my relationship with my dog, I’m the jealous girlfriend. For real. I constantly need to know that my dog loves me and I’ve tried every trick in the book to test his love. Of course, he fails all of them because his one true love is food. Not just any food, but food that’s been marinating on the iffy streets of New York for a while.

You think I’m exaggerating don’t you? Well, I have evidence that my sweet dog prefers food to my smothering snuggles.

Like me, I’m sure you’ve tried to test your dog’s love for you in some of the ways below:

1. Looking back at the window to see if they watch you as you leave or if they immediately move on with their day like YOU MEAN NOTHING.

2. Hide in the bathroom and not come out until you hear your dog whine outside the door.

3. When you come back from vacation and test their level of excitement at seeing you after SOOOOOOOOOOOO long. They better be FURRREAKING out right? That’s how you know they love you…right?!

4. Call to your dog at bedtime to see if they’ll come running to you and sleep in your bed rather than their own. I mean, if they love you they’ll want to be as close to you as possible, right?

5. Try to teach her how to say “I love you” because your Love Language is Words of Affirmation.

6. Give your dog a treat and see if they’ll share with you.

7. When you hide from them just to see how they’ll react.

8. Sneak in the backdoor to surprise them when you get home from anywhere. Work, vacation, gym, if they drop whatever they’re doing and come running to the door then you know they love you.

9. Pick up and give other dogs attention to see if your dog will care. And perhaps maybe, just maybe get jealous.

10. You play dead to see how they’ll react.

11. See if they’ll cuddle with you in the bed even if it’s hot af.

12. When you scream your dog’s name like it’s the end of the world to see how they respond.

There are so many more ways we try to test our dog’s love and we’re going to keep adding to this list. But, while none of these definitively prove if your dog loves you or not, you can take comfort in the fact that science says they do!
