In September, an unidentified elderly veteran suffered a heart attack and his recovery stretched from weeks to months. With no family to care for his Pit Bull mixes, Bailey and Blaze, the First State Animal Center and SPCA stepped in to look after the pups.

The situation was meant to be temporary, however the veteran’s recovery took longer than expected. Sadly, the rescue group had to make the difficult decision to put Bailey and Blaze up for adoption. Their dad was heartbroken and knew he was going to do whatever he could to bring his dogs home.

He was relieved and grateful when he arrived at the local PetSmart shelter on Wednesday to find out that his two best friends had not been adopted yet. He shared an emotional reunion with his ecstatic Pibbles, but he couldn’t bring them home right away. He told staff that he needed time to come up with the $250 adoption fee.

Everyone was touched by the veteran and the love he shares with his dogs. Volunteers and staff pitched in to pay the adoption fees! The outpouring of kindness did not stop there, others provided food, toys, and gift cards for the man and his dogs. Thanks to social media, donations from all over the country are pouring in to help this family get on their feet.

The video below shows the heartwarming moment when staff members tell the veteran that Bailey and Blaze will be coming home free of charge. He is overcome with emotion and says:

They’re MY dogs? This is so like…unbelievable. Thank you.

He then blows kisses as he looks towards the ceiling. His tearful response and obvious gratitude to the people who provided safe haven for his beloved pups is enough to bring the toughest among us to tears!
