In an enormous animal rescue by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the Houston SPCA in Sante Fe, Texas, 73 Irish Wolfhounds were rescued from a 6-acre property where they lived in extremely poor environmental conditions. Some were even without food and water. Many more animals, including other dogs, birds, snakes, cats and tortoises were also saved. The number of animals taken from the residence totaled over 100.

According to Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset, neighbors called to notify authorities about the situation at 5900 block Avenue R a little before noon. Due to the number of animals, the rainy weather, and the massive size of the wolfhounds, the rescue team worked all afternoon and well into the evening to transport the animals.

Although a few of the animals were taken to veterinary hospitals immediately due to their health situations, most were transported to the SPCA shelter in Houston.

At the moment, none of the animals are up for adoption. Their custody, as well as potential charges against the two owners, will be determined by a civil hearing later this month. The two men who own the property, one in his 60s and the other in his 70s, have thus far been cooperative with authorities.

However, the Houston SPCA has issued a call for help. Due to the number of animals brought in, and the sheer size of the Irish Wolfhounds (they’re the tallest breed on Earth) their capacities are being overwhelmed. Donations to help with food, medical treatment, and other much needed supplies are extremely welcome.
