Tanya Turgeon likes to say she met her rescue dog Gracie through the Mr. Bones & Co. ‘dating app.’ The pair had their ‘first date’ at the New York Animal Medical Center as Gracie was recovering from surgery. Both ladies sensed right away that their union was meant to be – Tanya accepted Gracie despite her physical scars, and Gracie was willing to take a chance on Tanya despite her wounded heart.
We may never fully know everything Gracie has endured during her short life. The wounds all over her face and body led her rescuers to believe she was a bait dog for a dogfighting ring. As shocking as her physical condition was, Gracie’s strength of spirit was most surprising of all. She utterly refused to let the actions of her tormentors turn her against humans or dim the light in her eyes.
Tanya, too, was in the process of healing when she met Gracie. Her beloved pup, Elsie, had passed away only weeks before. Together Elsie and Tanya had inspired thousands of social media users to adopt not shop, advocate for Pit Bulls, and battle cancer with a can-do attitude and a sense of humor. Although the inspirational Elsie was one of a kind and irreplaceable, Tanya knew it was time to honor her memory by rescuing another dog in need of a second chance.
Shortly after her adoption became official, Tanya posted an adorable selfie of sweet Gracie sleeping soundly on her chest. The attached caption reads like a rescue dog profile – for Tanya, instead of Gracie! She describes her age (in dog years, of course), relative good health, ability to get along with other humans, etc.

Gracie and Tanya truly rescued each other. We can’t wait to see what these two resilient survivors can accomplish now that they are a team!
