Here’s a part of the brain you may not have heard about before: the endocannabinoid (EC) system. Sounds complicated, right? It’s really just a science-y term for the system that tells us things like how hungry we are, if we’re in pain, and how our body feels and reacts to stimuli.
Dogs have this system, too.
We all have these naturally-occurring compounds inside us called cannabinoids. They interact with receptors in the EC system and help control those important body functions. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of those compounds.
What Is CBD?
CBD is a natural substance extracted from the hemp plant, and it comes with a variety of health benefits. Unlike marijuana, CBD does not contain THC, the psychoactive substance that produces feelings of being “high” or intoxicated.
What Is Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil?
Full-spectrum hemp oil includes all of the great endocannabinoids, including CBD (the most abundant component), terpenes, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, protein, fiber, and phytochemicals (naturally-occurring compounds produced by plants).
Essentially, this means that dogs receive some bonus nutritional perks in addition to the benefits of CBD.
What Are The Benefits Of CBD & Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil?
Pet parents use both CBD and full-spectrum hemp oil sporadically or on a daily basis to help ease dogs’ discomfort. They calm chronic pain (arthritis, hip dysplasia, nerve damage), inflammation, anxiety (vet and grooming visits, separation anxiety), noise phobias (fireworks, thunderstorms), seizures, side effects of cancer treatments, and other physical and emotional conditions.
They do not require a prescription or cause any major side effects, and you can even give CBD and full-spectrum hemp oil alongside existing medications, nutritional supplements, or specialized diets without risk of interference.
How Do I Administer The Extract?
The variety of ways to give CBD or full-spectrum hemp oil to your dog makes it super convenient. Lots of pups actually enjoy the taste!
After first determining the proper dosage for your dog’s weight, simply measure it out with the dropper and either give directly by mouth, on a treat, or mixed in with food.
A Note On *Regular* Hemp Seed Oil
Plain ol’ hemp seed oil (not full-spectrum) comes chock full of Omega-6 and Omega-3 essential fatty acids, Omega-9, GLA (gamma linolenic acid), and a collection of healthy proteins and amino acids.
Humans (and dogs!) commonly use it to help improve skin and coat health, reduce joint pain, and boost immune system function. Unlike CBD or full-spectrum hemp oil, however, its benefits are mostly nutritional and will not aid symptoms of stress or anxiety.
