When John Doddard’s rescue dog, Abby, began barking at the back door Tuesday evening, he initially ignored her. He had just sat down to dinner and assumed Abby simply heard a noise in the yard.
However, when her barks became all the more insistent, Doddard decided he had better take a look. When he saw the black smoke engulfing the rear of his home, he understood that Abby – a Pit Bull mix Doddard adopted – was trying to save his life.
No one was injured in the fire, but it burned so quickly and hotly that Doddard’s home was declared a total loss. The home next door even sustained some melted siding due to the searing heat of the flames.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but the fire marshall is currently investigating. Doddard and Abby are receiving aid from the Red Cross, and most importantly, they are both safe thanks to Abby.
