The Transportation Security Administration procures promising pups to undergo a rigorous training program. When they complete their training, they serve as airport bomb detection dogs, potentially saving countless lives.
Occasionally a particular dog isn’t up to snuff and is dropped from the program. TSA recently announced that they will make these dogs, and those who have reached retirement, available for adoption.
TSA’s adoptable dogs range in age from two to ten, and are mainly German Shorthaired Pointers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois. Potential adopters should be aware that these dogs were originally selected for their “drive”, meaning they tend to have lots of energy.
While with TSA they spent the majority of their time kenneled, not in a household environment. Getting a TSA pooch acclimated into your home will take patience and a significant adjustment period.
On the up side, all of the dogs have been spayed or neutered and have received some level of training. If you think your home may be a perfect fit for one of these heroic pups, TSA asks that you go to the website and submit an application via email at [email protected].
If your family meets the requirements, an adoption coordinator will provide photos of available dogs and assist you in finding your perfect match. You may then travel to San Antonio, Texas where the dogs are housed to pick up your new furever friend!
