ABC News 4 reports that Caitlyn, whose real name is Diamond, was hastily sold to a man for $10 on Memorial day, when the couple could no longer handle the ” rambunctious puppy who caused damage in their home.”

The couple said that they have contacted animal control and provided the information of the man who bought their Staffordshire Terrier mix.

The owners told ABC News 4 that they were fearful of eviction from their home and “decided they could not give Caitlyn the attention and training she needed.”

According to ABC News 4:

“A man saw Caitlyn and offered to buy her. The couple says they were in such dire straits that they sold her for $10 on Memorial Day. They say it’s one of the biggest mistakes they ever made.

On Wednesday morning, before he left for work, the former owner said he went outside and found the dog had returned to his home. He asked his neighbor to call 911.”

Live5News is reporting that the Humane Society of the United States has upped the reward money to catch the culprit behind Caitlyn’s abuse to $5000.

***Contains images which some may find unsettling.***

In Charleston, SC, a local stray named Caitlyn recently turned up with her muzzle taped shut. The tape had been wound so tight that Caitlyn’s beak swelled severely around the tape. Her tongue had been trapped between her front teeth.

Caitlyn may have been a stray in the Chicora-Cherokee community where she was found injured, but she’s popular with the local residents who told The Post and Courier she was a friendly dog.

She was turned over to the Charleston Animal Society, who have begun an investigation into the abuse of Caitlyn.

She had last been seen on Memorial Day, then seemingly disappeared for two days until she was found the following Wednesday with the electrical tape bound across her muzzle.

It’s possible the tape was in place the entire two days that Caitlyn was unaccounted for. Prolonged lack of blood flow to the tissues in her face worry veterinarians that she may lose part of her tongue to surgery.

A spokesperson for Charleston Animal Society says Caitlyn’s condition is as good as it can be considering her ordeal, and that she should be transferred to a special care facility soon. Toby’s Fund, a branch of Charleston Animal Society, is generously paying for all of Caitlyn’s treatment.

Witness Caitlyn’s survivor spirit for yourself in the video below.

If you have any information regarding Caitlyn’s case, or would like to donate to Caitlyn’s treatment, please contact Charleston Animal Society. They are offering a $1000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
