Dogs have been sharing the silver screen with humans since the days of silent film, with the likes of Rin Tin Tin and Lassie becoming impawtant figures in movie history. Stealing the spawtlight from their human counterparts, here’s a list of scenes in which pups deliver their best Oscar-worthy pawformances.
1. Annie
No on-screen duo captures the hearts of humanity better than Annie and Sandy. <3 Be sure to check out the remake premiering on December 19th!
2. Marley and Me
The classic story of boy and girl fall in love, get dog, and their lives are forever changed. Heartwarming alert!
3. The Proposal
Even though the stunts are CGI, this pup deserves an award for being off-the-charts adorable.
4. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Who knew Shih Tzus could be so helpful in dangerous Shih-Tzu-ations?
5. Beethoven
It takes a remarkable dog actor to look blasé when covered in so much beautiful mud.
6. The Artist
Movieline editor S.T. VanAirsdale actually launched a “Consider Uggie” campaign and Facebook page demanding that Uggie should win a real Oscar.
7. I Am Legend
Not going to give any spoilers here, but most of the visceral emotions that audiences felt while watching this movie have to do with the dog… Not Will Smith. (Sorry Will!)
8. Airbud
Air Bud’s free throw is better than 99% of humanity.
9. Lassie
One word: Parkour.
10. Homeward Bound
Chance’s expression when Shadow gets in trouble? Shadow’s pawformance when he falls into the railroad pit? Dalmatian spot-on.
11. Finding Neverland
It’s a rare breed of pup that can waltz with Johnny Depp.
12. Hachiko: A Dog’s Story
Richard Gere’s eyebrows have stiff competition with this pup. In the movie, Hachi the dog is played by three pups, Chico, Layla, and Forrest.
