A woman who spent her life helping animals was also honored by them in death.
Maria Suárez of Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico, made a point of feeding and caring for the stray dogs she came across in her neighborhood, and it didn’t go unnoticed. After Suárez passed away in March, a group of stray dogs arrived to her funeral to stand guard by her casket and mourn, reports ABC News.
Suárez’s daughter Patricia Urrutia and the others who gathered at the funeral in Merida Yucatan, were touched by the sight. Especially amazing to Urrutia was the fact that the funeral took place in a town 830 miles from where her mother lived, meaning these dogs weren’t the ones Suárez dedicated herself to feeding, but other strays who wanted to be near Suárez.
Staff at the funeral home says they had never seen anything like it before and that spotting stray dogs in that area is uncommon.
“They stayed with my mother all day, and then at night they all stayed – but in the morning, all the dogs vanished but one, but one hour before we brought my mom to be cremated the dogs came back and grouped around as if to say goodbye,” Urrutia told ABC News.
A bird also came into the funeral home and circled the woman’s coffin, another beautiful moment that Urrutia sees as a sign that her mother’s animal loving spirit lives on.
Following this stunning show of affection, the daughter shared photos of the dogs on Facebook where they have already received over 190,000 shares.
“Because of them we were happy,” Urrutia said of the dog visitors. “They made a sad situation an incredible one.”
