You know how when your friend has a kid and it seems like they run out and purchase a minivan or SUV overnight? Well, thanks to America’s bone-ified dog obsession, pup lovers can now join in on the car craziness.
A “dog-friendly” car is typically one that has a roomy interior, seats that fold down, and has low ride height so that dogs can get in and out easily. Autotrader recently compiled a list of pup-approved vehicles that meet the criteria above. If you’re in the market for a new car, check out these hot rods.
1. Mazda3
If you’re on a budget and don’t want to purchase a massive SUV or van, the Mazda3 is your best fit. The car offers a hatchback body style and a large cargo area to hold both your pup and their accessories. While it boasts other useful features, the best thing about the Mazda3 is its price. Only $17,000.
2. Smart’s forfour Model
Although this eclectic compact car didn’t make Autotrader’s list, it’s been getting high marks from dog owners who love the roomy interior. Smart‘s forfour model comes with “readyspace seats” that let you flip over the cushions to store large items. Pet owners say the seats are perfect for dogs who like the flat surface, and the seats can be flipped back over, keeping all the dog hairs safe and hidden from human butts. The downside? This car is only available in the U.K.
3. Ford Edge
For those looking for a car that’s larger than a compact, the Ford Edge is the perfect mid-sized car. The car has a large cargo area, low load floor, and boasts a strong turbocharged engine. At an affordable price, this car will make road trips with your pooch a breeze.
4. Jeep Renegade
The Jeep Renegade is the SUV for those who don’t want a gigantic car. Compact for its size, the Renegade has a removable cargo floor panel that makes storing dog accessories as easy as pie. And since this is a Jeep, you can take this car just about anywhere, whether it’s hiking or camping.
5. Subaru XV Crosstrek
Unlike other cars on this list, Subaru actually designs their cars with dogs in mind. They are partnered with ASPCA and the Center for Pet Safety and have donated millions of dollars to pets in need. So obviously their Crosstrek is Fido-friendly. This new-ish model has all the features pet owners love: a large cargo area, a roomy backseat, and all wheel drive. Perfect for hitting any road with dogs in tow.
6. Lincoln MKC
Just because you have a dog and a couple of kids doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice space for luxury. The Lincoln MKC has an impressive list of high-end features, but most importantly, it has a leather upholstery (perfect for cleaning up dog hair), a roomy interior, and climate control for the backseat. Riding with your dog has never felt so lush.
7. Kia Sedona
And if you absolutely must buy a minivan, this one is great for kids and dog lovers. Its third row seat folds all the way back, creating a flat space that’s perfect for dogs. Autotrader also thinks the second row captain’s chairs “make it very easy to attach a dog seat belt.” And, like all the other cars on this list, the car has low ride height for climbing in and out of the car with ease. However, if you want lots of features, expect to pay more than its $27,000 listing price.
