Abandoned Dog With “Free” Written on Her Fur Finds a Forever Home

UPDATE (6:10 PM) According to NBC Bay Area, The owner of "Libby" has come forward and provided veterinary records, pictures, and witness testimony to claim her dog. The woman claims the dog escaped from her yard and does not know how she ended up 60 miles away in Benicia. Police do not currently believe she had anything do to with the dog's abandonment or messages written on her fur. It's hard for a dog lover to imagine how anyone could abandon their pup, let alone use a black marker to scrawl "free" and "I need a home" on their fur and forehead! And yet, that is exactly how Shannon Bettencourt found her newest pack member when she happened upon the pup tied to a tree in downtown Benicia, California.

"The first thing I thought was to call the police but then I was like no, they're going to call animal control," Bettencourt said. "I didn't know what could happen from there. I was like no way, I'll at least keep her for the night," Bettencourt said.

But one night wasn't enough! Bettencourt fell in love with the sweet pup and plans to formally adopt her. The dog has been renamed Libby - short for Liberty as she was found the day before the 4th of July. "It was actually kind of a blessing in disguise, even though it was very sad to start with." she said. We're just glad there was a happy ending for lovely Libby! Check out the full story here:
