A woman driving on Highway 58 in Chattanooga, TN was recently met with an unexpected sight alongside the road near Goodwill: a wiggling cardboard box. "Stuff Animals" was handwritten on the outside of the box, but on the inside were not children toys, but three puppies. Despite having no food or water, the roughly 10-week-old Labradors were still alive, albeit dirty and suffering from heat exhaustion.
The pups were immediately taken to the McKamey Animal Center
where it was determined the little girls were all suffering from malnutrition in a cage.
The veterinary staff struggled to make sense of the inhumanity people can show such helpless and loving creatures, but veterinarian Chelsea Folal emphasizes their luck even in the face of such callousness:
"It is frustrating when you have someone do something so neglectful and inhumane. But I think these guys really lucked out that someone, a Good Samaritan, came along and found them. I think the outcome could have been a lot worse."
McKarney is offering a reward for information leading to the abusers, who, if found, will face animal cruelty charges. (Contact the office here.
) And the pups? As soon as they're healthy, the trio will be up for adoption and begin a life showing them the kindness, rather than cruelty.
