The scene isn’t uncommon. A pack of would-be Broadway babies anxiously wait for their chance to audition for a plum role on the Great White Way. Only this audition room gives a whole new meaning to “park and bark.”
Broadway star Audra McDonald and top-notch animal trainer Bill Berloni had the enviable task of having a playdate with 14 cuties who scored a callback. The top dog will play the role of Billie Holiday’s beloved pooch, Pepe, in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.
The only casting requirements were that the pups enjoyed being held, got along well with others and weighed less than 15 lbs. “What we’re looking for is a dog who will portray this character’s best friend at the end of her life. So relax, everybody. It’s all about the relationship you have with your animal,” he said. “Be yourself. Show us what’s special about your dog. Don’t worry about putting on a performance,” Berloni said. (Pawsome advice for an actor of any species.)
With this much talent in the room, it’s nearly impawsible to pick just one! Right, Audra?
Will it be Sylvia the frenching Frenchie?
Or snuggly Porkchop?
The final decision will be made soon, but for now, high paws to all the hopefuls for chasing their Broadway dreams!
