The police of Roseville, Michigan are on the hunt for two monstrous humans responsible for chaining up 2-year-old Pitbull mix behind a Walmart. By the time an employee discovered the dog, the poor thing had chewed off her own paw because of the bitter cold.

Police on the scene immediately called an animal control officer, who directed the pup’s recovery to Hopeful Heart Rescue and 4 Paws 1 Heart (an organization which funds medical treatment for abandoned animals).

“We had no idea if the dog had a legitimate amputation or what the situation was. We discovered that she had actually chewed her paw off. The leash, it was like a cable, it was very thick and had tied around her leg and actually acted as a tourniquet,” said Diana Rascano, president and co-founder of 4 Paws 1 Heart.

The pup was re-named Courtney and checked out by a veterinarian, who hypothesized that her leg became so numb that she chewed it off and, ultimately, consumed her own paw.

“She was trying to get away,” Rascano said. “The vet said what saved her was the tourniquet that caused the blood flow to stop, and the subfreezing weather may have frozen some of the wound so that she didn’t bleed to death.”

Courtney had to undergo two emergency surgeries – an amputation of her hind leg and the removal of the bone shards of her paw from her stomach. Thankfully, Courtney is expected to make a full recovery, and Hopeful Heart Rescue plans to handle her adoption. Even though Courtney went through such a horrible experience, Ranasco reports, “She’s been walking around licking everyone,” she said. “She’s just the sweetest dog. It seems like she belonged to someone at one time and how she winded up in that situation, we don’t know, but she will never have to go through that again.”

As for the suspects, police are investigating two men seen on surveillance footage fleeing the area before the time Courtney was found. Anyone who has further information can contact the Roseville Police Department at (586)-447-4483.
