Dayko the hero dog, who rescued seven people from under the rubble after a massive earthquake hit Equador, passed away from heatstroke this week. To put it in more emotional terms, Dayko died because he valued saving human lives more than he valued his own life.

Dayko’s official cause of death was, according to Cuerpo De Bomberos Ibarra Ibarra’s Facebook page, a “massive coronary myocardial infarction and acute respiratory failure.” The brave pup was only four years old and had been with the fire department for over three years.

The City of Ibarra Fire Department posted a lovely tribute to Dayko on Facebook, saying he was known for “his good sense of smell and charisma” and the “beautiful friendship” he had with his handler.

Dozens of firefighters and rescue workers, along with their rescue pups, attended Dayko’s funeral, giving their hero a proper goodbye.

In the fire department’s Facebook post, Dayko’s loved ones said:

This 4-legged friend gave his life in the line of duty. Thanks Dayko for your heroic efforts.

The Ibarra fire department is working with several rescue dogs to save people buried under the rubble of last Saturday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which left at least 650 people dead. Both humans and their rescue pups all paid their respects to Dayko.
